Insurance & Funding: Surgery with Dr. Stern at Hadassah Sharap

Most patients fund their surgery through their health fund’s supplementary insurance or through private health insurance. Here is how it works, and what to check in advance.

How does it work at Hadassah Sharap?

At Sharap — Hadassah’s private medical services — you choose your surgeon. Cataract and pterygium surgery with Dr. Stern takes place at Hadassah Sharap in Ein Kerem and at the Hadassah Beit Shemesh center.

Hadassah has arrangements with most insurers, so in most cases the operation is funded — fully or partly — by your health fund’s supplementary insurance or by private health insurance, according to your policy.

Health-fund supplementary insurance

Hadassah Sharap works with the supplementary plans of all four health funds:

The co-payment is set by the health fund and depends on your plan.

Private health insurance

Hadassah Sharap has arrangements with insurance companies including:

Under many policies the operation is covered with no co-payment, depending on the policy terms. If your insurer is not on the list, check with them directly.

What if I have no insurance?

You can also have the operation at Hadassah Sharap as a self-paying patient.

What costs extra?

Premium lenses — a toric lens to correct astigmatism, and multifocal or EDOF lenses to reduce dependence on glasses — involve an additional charge on top of the operation. Check in advance whether your insurance covers the lens. About lens types

How do I get funding approval?

Before the operation you need an approval (a commitment letter, “hitchayvut”) from your health fund or insurer. Dr. Stern’s clinic helps you obtain it.

To find out which insurance policies you hold, you can check for free on the “Har HaBituach” website of the Israel Capital Market Authority.

Laser surgery and ICL lenses

Laser vision correction (LASIK, PRK) is performed at the Ein Tal Hadassah center, which works under agreements with the health funds; some supplementary plans offer a reduced co-payment for these procedures. Details: Ein Tal Hadassah, *5023. ICL lens implantation is performed at Hadassah Ein Kerem; for funding, check with your health fund or insurer in advance.

Frequently asked questions

Is cataract surgery covered by supplementary insurance?

In most cases, yes — through the supplementary plans of the four health funds: Clalit Mushlam, Maccabi Sheli, Meuhedet Adif and Si, Leumit Kesef and Zahav. The co-payment is set by the health fund.

Which insurance companies work with Hadassah Sharap?

Among others: Migdal, Menora Mivtachim, Phoenix, Harel, Ayalon, Direct Insurance and AIG. Coverage and co-payment depend on your policy.

Can I choose my surgeon with insurance?

Yes. Surgery by a surgeon of your choice is one of the main benefits of supplementary and private insurance, and at Hadassah Sharap you can choose Dr. Stern.

Is a toric or multifocal lens included?

No. Premium lenses — toric, multifocal and EDOF — involve an additional charge on top of the operation. Check with your insurer whether the lens is covered.

Do the arrangements also apply in Beit Shemesh?

Yes. They apply to surgery at Hadassah Ein Kerem and at the Hadassah Beit Shemesh center.

Who helps me get the funding approval?

Dr. Stern’s clinic helps you obtain the approval from your health fund or insurer before the operation.
